Dogs as pets are becoming more and more of a staple in American family life. In fact, 60 percent of dog owners let their dog sleep on their bed or in their bedroom with them.

Although the majority of dog owners seem to take part in shared-bedroom practices, there are many who oppose allowing your pet in the bedroom, and for good reasons.

If you’re considering whether or not sharing your bed with your pet is right for you, hearing the pros and cons may help you weigh out the decision.

Reasons To Share the Bed

For a well-adjusted and well-behaved dog, the pros of having a dog sleep with you may outweigh the con...

We are convinced by these results that transport is the answer to rescuing thousands of dogs and cats in the coming years, and we are happy to say that because of the health and training of our dogs (see, ‘Why Our Pets are Vibrantly Healthy’ on our website), we are adding more rescue partners every week!

We want to give HUGE thanks to our new board president, Richard Feit (see his letter of introduction in this newsletter), who transported our most recent three passengers, Cecil the Old English Bulldog (rescued in the Dona Ana County Old English Bulldog Puppy Mill rescue), Red Rider the Red Heeler puppy, a...

Today, we have zero money in our bank account; we barely scraped paychecks together for our incredibly dedicated and hard-working caregivers.  It’s the beginning of the month, with all the ‘monthlies’ of our $1,500 rent (we’re two months behind as of this moment), insurance, taxes, supplies, veterinary bills, utilities, etc, due to come screaming into our mailbox. There’s no ‘profit’ to take it from because we are a NON-profit. Our only profit, is great lives, new wonderful futures, for these loving, loyal, amazing dogs and cats.

After we were embezzled by a former (now convicted) office manager, SBDC help...

Jessica was tied up outside the Carlsbad, NM animal control during the night, in freezing temperatures. The staff knew she had given birth out there, because the placenta was frozen to the cement. The babies were weak and so was emaciated Jessica, and every bone in her body was visible through her fur, even on her tail. All had pneumonia. All would have to be destroyed, if a no-kill shelter couldn't be found- and in New Mexico, there are only a handful. We received the call for help late that night, and Jessica and her babies arrived after 10 p.m.

Jessica was very very sweet, and all had to be rushed to th...

Alamogordo Earth Day, April 28, 2018

Alamogordo Earth Day was beautiful, and hugely successful! Our goals were two, and we accomplished both. One, we wanted to raise awareness about Animal Village NM’s wonderful adoptable pets, boarding services and training programs. Two, raise a little money to pay bills!

Well, we had a great space, right by the Chamber of Commerce in between the Alamogordo Space Museum and Solar Power folks, and one booth over from the Otero County Sheriff’s Office, who were offering the great Child Protection I.D. program- great neighbors, huh?

It was a gorgeous day, and the event drew r...

Then other times, you meet someone who explains why He does. One of those people for me is one of our SUPERdopters, Pam Maanum. A ‘SUPERdopter’ is someone who adopts from our no-kill shelter, gives a wonderful home to the cat(s) or dog(s) they’ve adopted, and helps us to save more lives after that. SUPERdopters help in so many ways. In Pam’s case, she has donated un-needed shoes to our year-round shoe drive fundraiser, she’s a monthly sponsor, and she often donates extra amounts out of the blue, from the goodness of her heart. She also boards her dogs with us, which also helps us to stay afloat.

The figures are in, we subsidized more than 200 spay and neuter surgeries in Lincoln and Otero Counties in 2017! This helps to reduce the numbers of unwanted litters being born by thousands, and we are SO grateful to great businesses like Lowe’s Signature Market Alamogordo, Alberston’s Ruidoso, True Value Western Auto, First Savings Bank, and other wonderful lifesavers who allow us to place our donation boxes on their counters! Thank you all who drop in your spare change, it’s a difference- less dogs and cats destroyed in animal control facilities, and other horrible fates.

Please forward this story to eve...

We were really sad, it was looking like we’d have to close down our Pet Food Bank, which we’ve offered to pet guardians in need since B.C.A.V.N.M (Before Creation of Animal Village NM)! There are so many pets who end up in animal control facilities because their guardians are in financial trouble, that this has helped many many pets stay safely in their homes. And here we were, with no dog food and people begging for help, some with tears in their eyes, dreading having to take that final step...the drive to the pound with their beloved dogs.

We went to Twice Blest Thrift Store, and asked for their help, fi...
